The Benefit of Meditation

Meditation is great for calming your mind and enabling you to relax after a stressful day. There are many forms of meditation some that you can do in seconds and some that you can do longer.
*****
Meditation also increases your ability to learn and makes you more intuitive. It is amazing how it gives you mental clarity and increases your intelligence. You will become more creative, calmer, more in control of your actions and will feel happier. It will also enable you to solve problems easier, whether they are small problems or big problems, meditation helps you think through them and resolve them easier.
*****
Meditation also gives you more energy, this is because you become less stressed and therefore more alert. It also improves your health as it not only regulates your breathing but also your natural healing hormones.
Meditation is now common in large organisations as it has been proven that when you meditate, your stress levels go down and your ability to think goes up.
*****
Some people like guided meditations that they can listen to and that help them relax. There are also subliminal meditations. These usually have calming music and either, someone giving commands in the background that goes straight to your sub-conscious mind, or some have subliminal messages that flash across your screen while you look at pictures. You are not required to read the messages as your sub-conscious mind will pick them up.
*****
Your conscious mind is the part that you use most of the time, it is your argumentative mind, the sub-conscious mind is unable to argue, so it easily accepts what it is told.
*****
A lot of the things that you think about your self are untrue but they were repeated to you over and over again by the people who had the most influence in your life when you were young, i.e. your teacher, your parents, other children.
Maybe you were told that you were stupid because you did something silly, later on someone else told you the same thing, so your conscious mind has heard it before and you then think this must be true because someone said it before. Now you believe yourself to be stupid, but you are not, everyone does something stupid in their lives, does that mean everyone is stupid? No of course not.
*****
Meditation helps you work out who you are and get rid of negative feelings about yourself. Once you can release these negative feelings you will see how unique you really are.
Study some of the richest and most successful people and you will find that they all use some form of meditation. They use it to improve their lives. You can improve your life too and you will feel healthier and happier and more in control.

Meditations Help Relieve Stress

Meditation has been used throughout the centuries to calm the nerves and relieve stress and anxiety. Meditation been used as a major factor in many different religions, from The Mayens, the Inca’s, Buddhism and Hinduism. There are now hundreds of different forms of meditation being used. It was mainly used in places like Asia. Shaman monks used mediatation as a way to achieve a trance-like -state.

It is reported that in order to become a Shaman, the student monk was taken to an icy river at night, he had to remove his garments and a blanket was soaked in the icy waters and wrapped around his body. The student had to meditate until he could control the temperature of his body and dry the blanket with the heat from his body. This process was performed several times throughout the night in order for the student to pass the test.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced Transcendental Meditation to the western world in 1959. He revived it from its ancient form and made it more accessable to modern day people.

By the mid 1990′s in excess of 180,000 people in Great Britain alone were using these techniques to not only relieve their stress but also to change their lives. TM requires that whilst sittiing comfortably you use a mantra to achieve a state of awareness called “restful alertness”. The idea is that you use this mantra to clear your mind of all negative and unnecessary thoughts.

In different states of awareness the brain displays different types of electrical activity and this electrical output can be recorded in wave patterns on machines. There is Beta brainwaves which are recorded as 14-30hz and these are charactistic of a busy working day. most of us are in the Beta stage most of the time. Meditation slows the mind down and helps to maintain Alpha brainwaves which usually record 8-13hz. These waves and more associated with calmness and relaxation. Then there is Theta which records at 4-7hz and is usually achieved when you are in a state of drowsiness ie; just before you go to sleep.

Meditation produces a state of deep relaxation , which in turn lowers your heart rate and decreases the level of oxygen consumption. With continual practice it will also lower your blood pressure.

Research has shown that stress is a key factor in a very wide variety of modern day illnesses. By using meditation we can cope a lot better with these illnesses and more often than not cure them ourselves without the need for medication.

The Eastern world have used meditation for centuries and incorporated them into martial arts. Martial arts are not designed as a way of fighting but as a way of controlling your mind and your body. They are to bring the mind and body into complete harmony and when you achieve this harmony you will combat stress and live a more controlled and relaxed life.

Some people use subliminal messages to help them achieve a state of meditation. These are becoming more and more popular. You put on an audio cd and sit quietly and listen to the suggestions which take you into a state of complete relaxation. You can now get dvd’s that have pictures or symbols on that you concentrate on and whilst concentrating the hidden messages are flashed on and off the screen, somethimes you are not aware of the messages but they help you relax.
Different people use different forms of meditation and there is not a right one or wrong one. You should try several and decide which one suits you best.

Visualisation Why Not Put It To The Test

Many athletes and sports people use visualisation within their training program. When Roger Bannister ran the four minute mile, he used visualisation to train and he ran the mile in his head several times before he actually put one foot on the track. Many professional golfers visualise their game before they even get near the green.
*****
A lot of us think that we are no good at visualisation and yet we use it every day of our lives. If you are one of the non-believers lets just try a little experiment. Do you have a car? What colour is your car? what make is it? How many doors does it have? Is the steering wheel on the left or the right hand side? Now did you have to go out to your car or look through a window to know the answer to these questions. No! you saw it in your mind, the chances are you see your car every day and know it inside out. Take the same principle and see whatever you desire in your minds eye, hold the image, give it life, touch it, smelit, taste it, use all your senses to give it life and the more often you visualise it the quicker you will attract it into your life.
*****
If you really have a desire to change your life, try visualisation for yourself, after all what have you got to lose?
*****
Everything that has been invented in the world, first existed in someone’s imagination before it was ever manufactured.
From the smallest pencil to the biggest building.
*****
For Information on the power of hypnosis to help with visualisation please look in the resources box below
Napoleon Hill in his famous book “Think and grow rich” is famed for saying “whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.” Many people have said that this is rubbish but it has been proven over and over again. Scientists and theologists now agree that this is the truth.
*****
This is not a new concept it has been used since the beginning of time.
*****
When you build the picture in your mind, you have to stick fast to it, no matter how bad things seem to get you must not get disheartened. Hold that image and keep building on the image, refuse to accept anything different and you will get it and more. Most people give up at the first hurdle and start doubting themselves, and the more they doubt the more they lose.
*****
Think of it like this, if your washing machine suddenly started spilling water out of the pipes, you would have to get a mop and start mopping up the water. Do you expect to mop up the water with one single stroke of the mop? No of course you don’t, you would have to keep wringing the mop out and mopping again. Eventually though the water would be gone and the floor would be dry. When you started mopping what was the purpose? The purpose was you wanted to dry the floor. You have now achieved your purpose, by carrying out a few small actions.
*****
That is another key to this secret, once you decide what you truly want, you build it by visualisation and then take inspired steps to achieve it. Do not worry how you will get it, you will soon find the way as long as you do not give up.
You will find that opportunities will soon appear and your goal will be reached.

Use Meditation To Quiet Your Stressful Mind

There are hundreds of different types of meditation. A lot of people class some of them as martial arts. Martial arts are not about fighting and violence but about control and inner peace. Meditation is about finding “inner peace” and connecting with your “spiritual you”. When you learn to meditate you learn to release the stresses of your day and let go of your negative emotions. This in turn re-aligns your body and spirit and brings you back into harmony and allows you to think constructively instead of destructively. Yoga, Tai chi, kung-fu, all these are forms of meditation using your mind and body to gain “inner peace”.
********
For thousands of years meditation has been used by all different creeds and nations. Different cultures use different sorts of meditation but there is no right or wrong meditation, there are just preferences.
********
Learning to meditate will greatly enhance your life. Most people however think it all mumbo jumbo. They go through life moaning about what little chances they had and how they always seemed to have bad luck but they just do not understand that if they had learned to quiet the voices that they listen to inside their heads each day then they would have a better life. Yes, we all have voices inside our head each day, they are called thoughts, and it is these “thoughts” that mould our life.
*********
Sit quietly for about ten minutes and take note of what you think about(you will be surprised how many thoughts you have in those 10 minutes). Now sit quietly for another 10 minutes and stop the thoughts coming through, just quiet your mind and concentrate on nothing but your breathing, take good deep breathes through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. After just 10 minutes you should feel calmer and more at peace with your self.

Meditation or Hypnosis

Mediation is a great way to release the stress from your daily life, but self hypnosis is another way. People tend to distrust hypnotists because they think that they will make them look silly by getting them to bark like a dog, or jump up and down or something equally as silly. But you do not need to go and see a hypnotist, you are quite able to hypnotise yourself. There is no danger in self-hypnosis. You cannot go into a trance and be incapable of waking yourself up as some people think.
********
Hypnosis is also a way to de-program your bad habits, like smoking, alcohol, untidiness. You can use hypnosis to learn skills that you always thought were hard.
********
You can also have a lot of fun with hynosis.

Visualisation

Visualisation is extremely powerful.  It is a technique that uses the imagination to create particular states of mind.

Visualisation is becoming more popular in todays society as there has been a lot of study into the benefits of this technique.  It can be used for a wide variety of purposes.  For training the mind, improving the concentration, solving problems or for improving self confidence.  It is also used by some for healing and achieving spiritual enlightenment.

Visualisation is not just about imagination, even thougfh it uses the imagination to create mental images of things.

Visualisation also uses the other senses, smell taste, touch, hearing, sight, but as it also uses emotions too.

Extensive study has shown that some visualisations can manifest themselves on the physical level.

Visualisation can be used to help get over fear and phobias.  For example someone who has a fear of snakes

can visualise a snake climbing over them and feel the snake actually there and if the visualisation is clear enough they may find themselves tensing up and becoming hot and clammy.  They will probably find that they are breathing faster or even sweating or shivering.

The reason that this happens is that your body cannot distinguish between reality and and visualisation.

Have you ever gone to sleep and and suddenly woke up shuddering or with a start because you felt something

and yet there was nothing there. This is like visualisation, if the situation that you are visualising is stressful enough then it triggers your body’s natural defence mechanism so that you react.

When your body’s  defence mechanism kicks in your body shuts out all the other systems that it does not need for its immediate survival and starts pumping adrenaline and anti-inflammatory agents into your system and your body will hen be ready to fight for its survival.

The benefits of visualisation is that it can be used to achieve a different lifestyle.  For example when we dream about something that pleases us our brain produces endorphins and other pleasure giving chemicals into our bodies and we start to feel physical joy.  By using the same principal we can change all things that have negative impacts on our lives.

If for instance you have a fear of speaking in public and someone tells you that you have to do a speech, you could visualise yourself standing in front of an audience, speaking clearly and full of confidence.  You would see the audience smiling at you and listening to every word that you are saying.  You can then imagine yourself getting calmer as you are now starting to enjoy this and by the end of the speech the audience is applauding and you are feeling comfortable.

When you keep visualising this scene eventually the right side of the brain will associate public speaking with pleasure and the fear that you once had will disappear.

There are a lot of actors and other high profile celebrities that use visualisation to achieve their ambition, because  although it starts out as a thought in the mind it has very profound physical effects.

Goal Achievement

In your mind think of a goal that you want to achieve.  Make the goal as clear as you can make it and decide on a time scale to achieve that goal.

*********

Sit in a comfortable chair and ensure that you keep both your arms and legs uncrossed and your back straight.  Try not to wear tight clothing as the more comfortable you feel the more relaxed you will feel.

*******

Close your eyes and begin focusing your attention on your breathing, taking long deep breaths.  Ideally you should feel your abdomen expand as you breathe in through your nose and contract as you breathe out through your mouth.  You will need to spend a couple of minutes conciously  breathing.  Then allow yourself to start  breathing naturally.  You should by now be feeling relaxed and calm.

********

Using your imagination, turn your concentration towards the goal that you want to achieve.  Imagine how it would feel to reach your goal, feel the emotions that you would feel, think of what you would be thinking when you realise your ambition.  Imagine that other people are there with you congratulating you and supporting you, hear their words of praise. Imagine what you would be wearing, what the room would look like, what and who would be in the room as you recieve your reward.  Make your vision as real as possible.  Feel the inner strength that you will feel when you have reached your goal, feel the experience of courage and optimism .  Congratulate yourself for reaching your goal .

*****

Now move your mind forward a couple of months, after having achieved your goal.  What do you see your life looking  like now?  How does it feel to live your dream?  congratulate yourself again for having the courage and determination to achieve your goal, know that you can overcome all fear and doubt to achieve anything that you want now and in the future.

*********

When you have finished your visualisation gently bring yourself  back to waking conciousness and again give yourself praise for what you have achieved.

Standing And Walking Meditation

Meditation need not only be done sitting or lying down.  It can be done anywhere and at any time.

Standing Posture

****************

You should stand with your feet about 18 inches apart and parrellel to each other, your head and spine should be in alignment.  Keep your pelvis straight so that the lower part of your back does not curve inwards and above all else do not strain.  The position that you are standing in should remain comfortable so that you can maintain your posture without you getting either restless or tired.

Golden Flower Meditation

**************************

This is  perfect for revitalising as it calls on the earths energy and does not deplete your own energy.

It is excellent also for developing your powers of concentration.

  1. Adopt the standing position and allow all tension to fall away whilst breathing calmly and naturally.
  2. Imagine that your spine is a straight stem and feel it growing upwards from your lower  back right upto your shoulders. Now imagine that a it continues growing up past your neck and that a flower is starting to bloom . The flower is trying to open and it pulls your spine further upright.
  3. As the flower is growing imagine that your feet are the roots of the flower and they are going deeper into the earth.  As you imagine this imagine also that your arms and hands are the leaves and they will become as light as air.
  4. Now imagine an energy that is like a white light travelling up from your feet (the roots) up through the stem and continuing up to the flower.  The light is filling up the entire flower and revitalising your whole being with its cleansing energy.  Hold this image in your mind for as long as you are able.

5 .   Let the light start descending  the flower starts to close and the light travels down the stem back into the roots,            down into the earth, as the light descends relax your body and feel all tensions gone from your body.

    Affirmation and Mantras

This exercise will help with controlling the mind and improving your concentration.

    1. Adopt a comfortable position and make sure you are really relaxed before you start.  let go of any tension allowing it to flow away from your body.
    2. Bring your attention to your breathing, following it’s natural rhythm.
    3. Repeat the word relax to yourself either in your mind or out loud.
    4. If you find that your mind starts to wander again gently bring it back in line and repeat the word ‘relax’ in rhythm with your breathing.
    5. Continue until you feel completely relaxed and conciously let go of any tension until your whole body is relaxed.

The most suitable affirmations are the ones that help you control the inner chatter.  They should be short and eay to fit into the rhythm of your normal breathing.  The following are some suggestions

‘Let it go’   ‘Peace Forever’  ‘ Wide Awake’ ‘Joyful and free’   ‘Silence’

    *************************************************

    Mantras

    *******

Mantras are much the same as affirmations, they are statements that you repeat to yourself.  However unlike affirmations, the quality of the sounds of the mantras are very important.  The sounds are reported to resonate though the body and bring about a transformation of consciousness.

There seems no doubt that some mantras have a magical quality about them and are often used in spiritual traditions. The Muslims,Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have used mantrs for thousands of years.  However you do not have to follow any religion to use a mantra.

mantras can be used to induce a state of total peace or they can be used to increase awareness, alertness or creativity.

The most popular Christion mantra is ‘Alleluia’ which comes from the Hebrew word Hallelu (Which means Praise) and jah (Which means Jehovah) together they mean (Praise God)

    ****************

Om Mani Padme Hum is another well known mantra. This is usually used by Buddhists and is used to dispel negative feelings.  It is also thought that this mantra helps keep you alert whilst you relax.  It is said using your breaths and is pronounced ‘Aoom-mani-padmay-hoom.

    *************

Probably the most famous of all the mantras is of Hindu origin and is pronounced a-oo-m . The Hindus believe that om is the sound vibration that underlies the creation of the universe.

The a is sounded like the a In Car. It is considered a very powerful mantra and one that you should choose if  youwant to identify with the oneness of the universe .

    The Power of Mantras

    *************************

It is probably best to use mantras that are known to work well and then later on you can create your own mantras.  A good mantra should resonate and hum through your body.  You may only be able to concentrate on this exercize for a few minutes at first but  try to build up to about 20 to 30 minutes.
